CAMFT DEBUTS EXTREME MAKEOVER OF COUNSELINGCALIFORNIA
The California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT) has announced the launch of its revamped consumer Web site, CounselingCalifornia.com. The online resource offers valuable advice about mental health challenges, tips on selecting a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT), and information about how therapy can help one manage difficult daily challenges.
An estimated 8 million Americans suffering from a mental illness do not receive proper treatment yearly, according to a 2002 study conducted by Harvard University. The most common barrier to seeking treatment is a person's unawareness of where to find key information about mental illness signs and symptoms, the benefits of therapy, and how to select a therapist.
With its listing of more than 7,500 licensed mental health professionals, CounselingCalifornia.com can be a powerful online tool at one's fingertips. A visitor to the Web site can identify a therapist's skills, area of expertise, educational background and other information that can ensure a positive and successful therapy experience.
The National Mental Health Association estimates 54 million Americans suffer yearly from some form of mental disorder of which there are more than 200 classifications. The good news is that some of the most common types -- depression, dementia, bipolar disorders and anxiety disorders -- can be treated by a Marriage and Family Therapist.
By and large, those who seek the services of a mental health professional report being satisfied with the type of treatment received. According to a 2004 Therapy in America study, fully 80% of those needing treatment for a mental illness found therapy or medication extremely effective.
MFTs are trained to assess, diagnose and treat individuals with common mental health conditions such as experiencing stress, anxiety or depression, or having an addiction. Therapy can help ease common sources of stress, including financial worries, family problems and heavy workloads.
