Personal Statement

Personal Statement:
Are you feeling out of sorts and not sure how to get out of your current predicament? You may be trying to get established on your life path, starting a family, being more self-sufficient, however something is still missing. Does thinking about making positive changes seem overwhelming? Considering counseling is a brave and important decision towards finding the solutions to good emotional health. People sometimes don’t want to admit they have problems. Creating a sense of hope that things will improve is an important first step towards enacting change. Maybe there is hope and we can find it together. I work with many motivated clients who choose to come to counseling, because they understand the importance of seeking wise counsel. It is exciting to witness a client make great strides when they work hard, use the tools and take an active role in the therapeutic process. My role is to improve understanding and clarity that leads to change talk. Once you, the client, express your goals and vision, the process of therapy begins. I would refer to this change in thinking as a “paradigm shift.” I witness good outcomes once the client takes responsibility for the changes they need to improve their lives. My job is not to fix my clients or tell them what to do. My responsibility is to work as a guide, consultant, teacher and adviser towards their vision of good mental health. I work with many treatment methods to tailor a plan that best suits each individual client. I have over 24 years of clinical experience working in a variety of settings. My last 14 years have been exclusively in private practice working with children, teens, adults and couples. Anxiety, panic, trauma, stress and depressive symptoms are some of my specialties. I look forward to helping you achieve your treatment goals.

Donna J. Shanahan, MA

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
Pasadena, CA 91101

I am a Marriage and Family therapist in private practice. I work with individuals, couples, and families in short and long-term psychotherapy. We work together to explore memories of the relational dynamics of the individual’s family, the feelings those dynamics created for the individual as a child, and how the individual now relates to those feelings and memories.
